The very ability and presence of a tan to enhance beauty is legendary, it's no wonder that the drive to get and keep one has most of us either heading outside, or the case with us Brits, heading to the local tanning salons or reaching for the nearest bottle as soon as we feel we are fading.
Tanning is by no means a new fad or phenomena, and the ease with which we can finally grasp one these days has further spurred our urge to tan. This all makes sense when we think that The Sun has always been man's constant companion - in essence those sun terraces and solariums of Ages past are the equivalent of our modern day tanning salons and beach hotspots. So it's not new, all this tanning!
In the light of the 21 st century the "tanned look " is now linked more to being fashionable and trendy - gone are the days where 'tanning' was simply recognised by doctors as a way to promote general well-being. Yes before the days of Peter Andre and Jordan the number one reason for having a tan wasn't just to look good!
Yet no one can argue that having that 'sun-kissed look' directly communicates to people our type of lifestyle and in itself has the charm of helping us present a more confident self. This follows that age old saying. "Look good, feel good". Our skin is the first glimpse of "us" that people get because it's available to all eyes. Yes we can tell ourselves that beauty is on the inside, but do any of us have any idea how hard that beauty is to communicate to the outside world. Like it or not our skin has become poignant to self-esteem and having a bit of colour accentuates this. On seeing a well bronzed body we immediately conjure up words such as attractive, glowing, sexy - in short a full picture of health. And this is exactly the type of message that people want to broadcast. Just like many other fashion statements, a tan is linked to how we view ourselves and consequently how we think other people view us.
So are having that extra confidence boost and that `feel good` sensation not worth the time and effort of building and maintaining a tan? After all, what goes better with a tan this summer more than a smile!
